- Learning Objectives
Writing Quality Learning Objectives (Park University) are a general statement about the larger goals of the course or program. Objectives, competencies, and outcomes can be written to describe the learning gained by students in individual courses (Select or Design Assessments That Elicit Established Outcomes (North Central Regional Educational Laboratory) ) or for the program as a whole (programmatic outcomes). The main distinction between objective or competency and a true learning outcome is that a learning outcome is written so that it can be measured or assessed. Thus, learning outcomes are the basis for an Learner-Centered Assessment on College Campuses -- Shifting the Focus from Teaching to Learning. Boston, Allyn and Bacon.)
Courses and learning activities can be assessed via diverse mechanisms, such as pre- and post-tests, written assignments with rubrics, exams, surveys, and capstone or other comprehensive experiences documented with portfolios. Graded assessment of a student's performance regarding learning objectives is sometimes referred to as Evaluation or Summative Evaluation.
