Carol Morgaine has been involved in preparing undergraduate and graduate students to work, professionally, with children, youth and families for over thirty years. Having come up through the ranks as an early childhood and parent educator, her interests have gradually focused more on the professionals working with children and families than on the children and families themselves. She has been at Portland State University (PSU) since 1995. Her interest and involvement in the use of portfolios as a means of assessing student learning emerged after having taught a Capstone class and then creating a more focused, structured portfolio system for the CFS Program. Known as the only undergraduate major at PSU that uses a portfolio system to assess students’ learning, the CFS Professional Portfolio facilitates the development of critical thinking, professional writing skills, and integration of learning. Carol has also lived and taught in Kenya, at Kenyatta University, and is actively involved in conducting faculty-led Study Abroad programs for PSU students. Carol has an undergraduate degree in Home Economics: Child and Family Studies/Early Childhood Education, a master’s degree in Education: Early Childhood and Parent Education, and a Ph.D. in Education with emphasis in Women’s and Family Studies. She is a Professor and has served as Program Director for Child and Family Studies since 2001.

Amy Spring, MPA, is currently the Assistant Director, Community-University Partnerships at Portland State University. She has been directing the Corporation for National Service grant for the university for the past 10 years. As the Assistant Director Ms. Spring works with PSU students, faculty, staff, and community partners to facilitate and support service-learning activities. While working as the Assistant Director Ms. Spring has been responsible for coordinating assessment of service learning activities, facilitating faculty and student development workshops on community service, coordinating recruitment of students and faculty to participate in community service, and managing all grant financial and programmatic reporting. Her experience in working with many university and community constituents is clearly demonstrated by these varied responsibilities.

In addition to the specific grant management responsibilities listed above, Spring has worked very closely with a group of faculty and Student Affairs professionals who developed the Leadership for Change cluster curriculum. Her experience with curriculum development for this cluster of courses is particularly important since the entire series of 25 courses are service-learning courses. She also has developed a co-curricular student leadership program where students serve as a bridge between community organizations and curricular service learning courses.

On the national level, Spring’s scholarly presentations and publications include topics such as “Student Leadership Development in Service Learning; The Impact of Service Learning on Students, Faculty and Community Partners: Learning Outcomes and Changing Roles; and Comprehensive Case Studies of the Impact of Service Learning on Students, Faculty, Community, and the Institution: Findings; Defining, Documenting & Evaluating The Scholarships of Engagement and Teaching.”

Spring has focused her professional life and her academic studies around collaboration and civic and social responsibility. She received her Masters degree in Public Administration from Portland State University’s Hatfield School of Government. Her emphasis of study was on non-profit management and collaborative management styles. She received her undergraduate degree in Sociology and Urban Studies. While working on her undergraduate degrees, Spring became interested in the creation of regional livability through the development of civic and social responsibility.
